אולי

Lexicons associate with the word אולי the meaning "perhaps". However, this meaning does not fit Nu 22:33. It does not fit perfectly either Jer 26:3, 36:3 (see below). Now, the BDB lexicon derives אולי as או לא "or not", just as לולי is derived as לו לא "if not". This document shows that the meaning "or not" can be applied to all passages in which the word appears. More precisely, a statement of the form "X or not Y" is interpreted here as stating that in the opinion of the speaker, Y requires X. This means either that Y cannot happen unless X is done, as is the case in most passages, or that if Y has happened then X must be done, as in Ge 43:12 and Job 1:5. The fact that Y cannot happen unless X is done, does not imply that if X happens then Y will happen. Rather, it only states that X is necessary for Y. Thus, "X or not Y" is not equivalent to "if X then perhaps Y", which does not make X necessary for Y; another difference is that the word "perhaps" implies that the speaker is uncertain about the outcome of X. Now, several passages of the LXX translate אולי with ει πως. It is interesting that if the word-for-word translation of ει πως is used, namely "if how" (see the notes on ειπως), then אולי and ει πως would seem to be equivalent. Indeed, "X if how Y" could be interpreted as stating that if there is a question about how Y could be accomplished, the answer would be that by carrying out X first. In addition to the pattern "X or not Y", we also find "X or not X because Y" in Nu 22:33. Here, Y explains why X could have not happened. Moreover, in the context of conversations, when אולי begins a sentence, we have a pattern "Or not Y", which is interpreted as a question "Or is it not possible that Y be true?" Here "or" introduces a possibility "Y" that has not been considered earlier in the conversation and that is typically contrary to something that has been implicitly assumed before; see the comments below on Ge 18:23-32, 24:5, 27:12, Jos 9:7, 14:12, and Hos 8:7.

The Lord was not saying that if they heard the message they would repent, but only that they had to hear the message in order to repent. The Lord knew that they will not repent, but he was speaking here without revealing his foreknowledge of the situation.

See the comments above on Jer 26:2-3.

The verse did not say that these could help, but that her situation was so desperate that these were her only hope. In her time of need, these things that she trusted in were proven to be no help at all.

"And the servant said to him, 'But is it not a possibility that the woman will not be willing to follow me to this land? Should I take back thy son to the land from which thou camest?" Up to this point the implicit assumption has been that the woman would be willing to go with Abraham's servant to the promised land. So אולי "or not" introduces here the alternative that the woman might not be willing to go. When translating Ge 14:5, the word "but" was used instead of "or" since it seems to fit better English style.

If אלי is understood to denote אולי, then the verse could be translated in a similar fashion to Ge 24:5 above. Otherwise, it would simply state "Amd I said to my master, 'Suppose the woman will not come to me to follow me.''"

"And Jacob said to his mother Rebekah, 'Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man and I am a smooth man. Or will not my father feel me? And I shall be as a deceiver in his sight and bring on myself a curse and not a blessing.'" Here אולי introduces a possibility that was not mentioned earlier in the conversation, the possibility that Isaac would feel Jacob.

"And the men of Israel said to the Hivites, 'But is it not a possibility that ye dwell among us, and how shall we make a covenant with you?'"

"'And Abraham answered and said, 'Now behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, although I am but dust and ashes. Or is it not a possibility that the fifty righteous are lacking five? Wilt thou destroy the entire city because of five?' And he said, 'If I find there forty-five, I will not destroy it.'" Here, אולי introduces a new possibility, the possibility that the city would have only 45 righteous instead of 50.

"And he spoke to him again and said, 'Or is it not a possibility that forty will be found there?' And he said, 'I will not do it for the sake of the forty.''"

"For they sow wind and reap whirlwind. The stalks have nothing [no grain], the sprout does not yield meal. Or else would it not be that foreigners would devour what it yielded?" Here, אולי יעשה זרים יבלעהו was translated as a question because the alternative "or if it is not the case that it yields ... " does not fit the context, which has already considered the case in which it does not yield in בלי יעשה קמח.

"And take double the money in your hand, and the money that was returned in the mouth of your sacks take back in your hands. Or if this is not necessary, it was not a mistake."

"And it came to pass that when the cycle of the days of feasting was complete, that Job would send and sanctify them. He would rise up early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all, for Job said 'Or it may be that my sons did not sin and curse God in their hearts.' Thus Job did continually." Here, "or" introduces the alternative that the sons of Job did not need the sacrifice.
