Notes:

(1) Comparing ויבאו עבדי דוד ארץ בני עמון in 2Sa 10:2 and ויבאו עבדי דויד אל ארץ בני עמון in 1Ch 19:2, note that the former refers to the servants of David coming to the land of the sons of Ammon, while the latter to the servants of David departing for the land of the sons of Ammon. [Back]

(2) One difference between 2Sa 10:3 and 1Ch 19:3 is that the former uses אל חנון while the latter לחנון. Thus, in 2Sa 10:3 we read, ויאמרו שרי בני עמון אל חנון "And the princes of the sons of Ammon said towards Hanun," from which we could understand that the verse describes a message that they sent to the king. Moreover, in 1Ch 19:3 we read, ויאמרו שרי בני עמון לחנון "And the princes of the sons of Ammon said to Hanun," from which we could infer that the verse speaks of something that they spoke directly to the king. Then, it would appear that 2Sa 10:3 took place before 1Ch 19:3. Evidence that 2Sa 10:3 and 1Ch 19:3 do not correspond to the same event is also the fact that in the former verse the Ammonite leaders regarded David's men as spies of the city, while in the latter as spies of the land. The two verses are compared side-by-side in the following table.

(2Sa 10:3) ויאמרו שרי בני עמון ...

(1Ch 19:3) ויאמרו שרי בני עמון ...

(2Sa 10:3) ... את העיר ...

(3) 2Sa 10:6-14, 1Ch 19:6-15, 2Sa 10:15-18, and 1Ch 19:16-18 are understood here to describe four different events. The Syrians must have considered themselves much stronger than the Israelites, for they kept fighting Israel. Given their large numbers of foot soldiers, horsemen, and chariots, the Syrians were probably unable to see how Israel could defeat them. Israel defeated them because the Lord was with them, not because of their strength.

Assuming that the Ammonites sought help first from close by kingdoms and then from more remote kingdoms, 2Sa 10:6-14 precedes 1Ch 19:6-15. Evidence that 2Sa 10:6-14 and 1Ch 19:6-15 describe different battles is as follows.

A comparison of 2Sa 10:6 and 1Ch 19:6-7 is given in the following table.

(4) The similarity of 2Sa 10:7 and 1Ch 19:8 emphasize that David responded the same way in the context of 2Sa 10:6 and in the context of 1Ch 19:6-7. Comparing הצבא הגברים in 2Sa 10:7 with צבא הגבורים in 1Ch 19:8, note that גברים functions as an adjective and גבורים as a substantive. The former phrase means, "the mighty army" while the latter, "the army of mighty men."

(2Sa 10:7) וישמע דוד וישלח את יואב ואת כל ...

(1Ch 19:8) וישמע דויד וישלח את יואב ואת כל ...

(2Sa 10:7) ... הצבא הגברים

(1Ch 19:8) ... צבא הגבורים

[Back]

(5) 2Sa 10:8 and 1Ch 19:9 indicate that the locations of the battles of 2Sa 10:8-14 and 1Ch 19:9-15 were similar but different. Note that השער "the gate" in 2Sa 10:8 refers to a city, as could be seen also in 2Sa 10:14. In the context of 2Sa 10, that city is the city of 2Sa 10:3, which must have been Rabbah (2Sa 11:1). However, in the context of the other battle, העיר "the city" in 1Ch 19:9 refers to מידבא "Medeba" (1Ch 19:7). In both cases, the battle plans were similar: the Syrians were to attack Israel from one side and the Ammonites from the opposite side, with support from a nearby fortified city. The two verses are compared in the following table.

(2Sa 10:8) ויצאו בני עמון ויערכו מלחמה פתח ...

(6) The battles of 2Sa 10:8-14 and 1Ch 19:9-15 had similar plans. See the note (5) above for the plans of the Syrians and the Ammonites. That the plans of the Israelites for the two battles were similar is emphasized by the fact that 2Sa 10:9-12 and 1Ch 19:10-13 are nearly identical; see the following table for a comparison of 2Sa 10:9-12 and 1Ch 19:10-13.

(7) Considering the battles of 2Sa 10:8-14 and 1Ch 19:9-15, their outcome was similar, as could be seen in 2Sa 10:13-14 and 1Ch 19:14-15. Comparing the form ינסו of 2Sa 10:13-14 with ינוסו of 1Ch 19:14-15, it can be seen that the latter adds more emphasis to the fact that the Syrians and the Ammonites fled; perhaps, they were in more hurry to escape after the battle of 1Ch 19:9-15. While at the time of 1Ch 19:15 the Ammonites went העירה "towards the city", at the time of 2Sa 10:14 they went to the city.

(8) As mentioned also in the note (3), 2Sa 10:15-18 and 1Ch 19:16-18 are understood here to refer to different occasions. Several indications that the two passages refer to different occasions are as follows:

When the enemies of Israel saw that they failed to defeat them, they sought to get stronger by making alliances with other nations. So Ps 83:3-8 (83:4-9) and Ps 60:1 (60:2) fit the time of 1Ch 19:16-18. Note that the Ammonites were descendants of Lot and Ps 83:8 (9) states explicitly that the alliance was helping Lot's descendants. Now David had some other conflicts with Edom before the time of Ps 60:1 (60:2); see the note (11) on 2Sa 8:13 and 1Ch 18:12 in the article comparing 2Sa 8:1-10:1 and 1Ch 18:1-19:1.

The next table compares 2Sa 10:15-16 and 1Ch 19:16.

(10) The next table compares 2Sa 10:18 and 1Ch 19:18. As indicated also in the note (8) above, 2Sa 10:18 and 1Ch 19:18 provide evidence that 2Sa 10:15-18 and 1Ch 19:16-18 do not refer to the same event. First, the commander of the Syrian army was שובך "Shobach" in one case (2Sa 10:18), but שופך "Shophach" in the other (1Ch 19:18). Moreover, in 2Sa 10:18 the Israelites destroyed 700 chariots and killed 40,000 horsemen, while in 1Ch 19:18 they destroyed 7,000 chariots and killed 40,000 foot soldiers.

Comparing מלפני in 1Ch 19:18 with מפני in 2Sa 10:18, note that the former emphasizes the Syrians fleeing while in the presence of the Israelites, while the latter emphasizes the Syrians fleeing so as to avoid getting into the presence of the Israelites; a discussion of these two forms appears in the note (12) on Ps 96:9 and 1Ch 16:30 in the article comparing 1Ch 16:7-36 with Ps 105:1-15, 96:1-13, 106:1, 47-48.

(11) The following table compares the first parts of 2Sa 11:1 and 1Ch 20:1. A careful examination of the two verses reveals that the first part of 2Sa 11:1 took took place before 1Ch 20:1. Indeed, where 1Ch 20:1 has מלכים "kings", 2Sa 11:1 has מלאכים "messengers." Clearly, messengers normally preceded the kings. So the time when messengers would go out (2Sa 11:1) preceded the time when kings would go out (1Ch 20:1). It could be concluded that when David sent Joab, his servants, and the people (2Sa 11:1), they did not go right away to attack the Ammonites. Rather, Joab had first to gather all men of the army. Doubtless, this took some time and involved sending messengers. At the time when kings would go out, Joab led the army to the Ammonites (1Ch 20:1), so by that time the army was ready.

(12) Considering את בני עמון "the sons of Ammon" in 2Sa 11:1 and את ארץ בני עמון "the land of the sons of Ammon" in 1Ch 20:1, the two phrases are similar though with different emphasis. Indeed, note that the Hebrew phrase בני עמון "the sons of Ammon" typically refers to the nation of the sons of Ammon, though sometimes it denotes the land of the sons of Ammon (Eze 25:5, Zep 2:9) just as ארץ בני עמון. Thus, 2Sa 11:1 emphasizes that the Israelites were bringing ruin to the nation of the sons of Ammon, while 1Ch 20:1 states explicitly that Joab was ruining the land of that nation. [Back]

(13) Understanding יושב as a qal participle, 2Sa 11:1 states that David was staying in Jerusalem while Rabbah was besieged. Moreover, understanding ישב as a qal imperfect, 1Ch 20:1 mentions a period of time during which David was in Jerusalem and that was in between the beginning of the siege and the time when Rabbah was taken. The time from the beginning of the siege to the fall of Rabbah was rather long, for it corresponds to 2Sa 11:2-12:25. So after David's relationship with the Lord was restored and the Lord spoke favorably to him in 2Sa 12:25, he also gave him victory over Rabbah. [Back]

(14) Both 2Sa 12:31 and 1Ch 20:3 indicate that David exercised authority over the Ammonites and assigned them to labor involving sharp instruments (saws, axes, picks). Both ישר in 1Ch 20:3 and והעביר אותם במלכן in 2Sa 12:31 are understood to indicate that David ruled over the Ammonites, that he ensured that the Ammonites were under his authority. Note that ישר is understood here as the verb שרר "to rule," as in Jdg 9:22; an instance in which the verb refers very explicitly to one exercising authority over others appears in Nu 16:13. As for the word מלכן, note that one way to form nouns from Hebrew verbs is by adding the suffix ן. So מלכן was derived with the meaning "authority" from מלך "to reign", as authority is something that one reigns with. This derivation is similar to that of גרזן "axe" from גרז "to cut off," פעמן "bell" from פעם "to agitate," and קרבן "gift" from קרב "to approach, come near." [Back]
