Notes:

(1) The phrase מתג האמה "the one-cubit bridle" of 2Sa 8:1 is understood here as denoting figuratively the ability to control Israel. Note that מתג has been used figuratively also in 2Ki 19:28 and Is 37:29. Under this interpretation, מתג האמה in 2Sa 8:1 and גת ובנתיה in 1Ch 18:1 have completely different meanings. [Back]

(2) There is a difference between ותהי מואב לדוד לעבדים נשאי מנחה in 2Sa 8:2 and ויהיו מואב עבדים לדויד נשאי מנחה in 1Ch 8:2. The former speaks of the country of Moab becoming a territory for servants of David bringing tribute, while the latter states that the people of Moab became servants of David bringing tribute. [Back]

(3) That 1Ch 18:3-4 and 2Sa 8:3-4 do not refer to the same events can be seen when considering their details. While in 1Ch 18:3 Hadadezer came להציב ידו בנהר פרת, that is, to defend his dominion in the area of the river Euphrates, in 2Sa 8:3 he came להשיב ידו בנהר, that is, to regain control of the area. Therefore, it would appear that 1Ch 18:3 took place before 2Sa 8:3-4. As for the word יד, it refers to authority also in Ps 89:25 (26). The following table compares 2Sa 8:3 and 1Ch 18:3.

(2Sa 8:3) ...

(2Sa 8:3) ...

(1Ch 18:3) ...

(1Ch 18:3) ...

(2Sa 8:3) ...

(1Ch 18:3) ...

(1Ch 18:3) ...

(2Sa 8:3) ...

(2Sa 8:3) ...

(1Ch 18:3) ...

(1Ch 18:3) ... פרת

Moreover, when comparing 1Ch 18:4 with 2Sa 8:4, it becomes obvious that the two verses do not refer to the same events. While in each instance David chose to keep 100 chariots and to capture 20,000 foot soldiers, at the time of 1Ch 18:4 he captured 7,000 horsemen, while at the time of 2Sa 8:4 only 1,700. This could indicate that the second time Hadadezer did not have an army as strong as in the previous occasion. 2Sa 8:4 and 1Ch 18:4 are compared in the following table.

[Back]

(4) Comparing ותבא in 2Sa 8:5 with ויבא in 1Ch 18:5, the former refers to the nation of ארם דמשק, while the latter refers more explicitly to the troops of ארם דרמשק. [Back]

(5) Considering 1Ch 18:6, the usage of the verb שום fits the same pattern as in 1Sa 15:2 and 1Ki 20:12, where it also appears without object. Thus, understanding the verb with the meaning "to be stationed", the verse states that David was stationed for a while among the Arameans of Damascus. As indicated by 2Sa 8:6, he placed garrisons there before leaving. [Back]

(6) As mentioned also in the note (2), there is a difference between ותהי ארם לדוד לעבדים נושאי מנחה in 2Sa 8:6 and ויהי ארם לדויד עבדים נשאי מנחה in 1Ch 8:6; see the note (2). [Back]

(7) Comparing וישע יהוה את דוד בכל אשר הלך in 2Sa 8:6 and ויושע יהוה לדויד בכל אשר הלך in 1Ch 18:6, the latter is understood to imply also salvation of others to the benefit of David. [Back]

(8) Note that אל עבדי הדדעזר in 2Sa 8:7 indicates that the shields were with the servants of Hadadezer, while על עבדי הדדעזר in 1Ch 18:7 shows that the servants of Hadadezer used them. [Back]

(9) Considering 2Sa 8:9 and 1Ch 18:9, the interpretation here is that the king of Hamath congratulated David after each victory against Hadadezer. It seems most natural to assume that 2Sa 8 mentions the occasion in which David was congratulated for the victory recorded in 2Sa 8, while 1Ch 18 mentions the occasion in which David was congratulated for the victory recorded in 1Ch 18. That 2Sa 8:9-10 and 1Ch 18:9-10 refer to different events can be seen by comparing the two passages. The following table compares 2Sa 8:9 with 1Ch 18:9.

(2Sa 8:9) ...

(1Ch 18:9) ...

(2Sa 8:9) ...

(1Ch 18:9) ...

First, it can be noticed that at the time of 2Sa 8:9 the name of the king of Hamath was not the same as at the time of 1Ch 18:9; the name of the king is תעי in 2Sa 8:9-10 but תעו in 1Ch 18:9-10. Unless an indication is found that 2Sa 8:9-10 and 1Ch 18:9-10 mention the same king, the natural conclusion is that two different persons are meant. It follows that the king of Hamath changed sometime between the times of 1Ch 18:10 and 2Sa 8:10. Further support for this view is found in the fact that the sons of the king that visited David in the two occasions had different names; note that הדורם came to David in 1Ch 18:10 but יורם in 2Sa 8:10. The fact that both תעי and תעו have been men of war with Hadadezer (1Ch 18:10, 2Sa 8:10) does not imply that Hadadezer had wars with Hamath between the times of 1Ch 18:9-10 and 2Sa 8:9-10, though this is a strong possibility. Rather, it only implies that both תעי and תעו were involved in the wars with Hadadezer. A comparison of 2Sa 8:10 and 1Ch 18:20 follows in the table below.

(2Sa 8:10) ...

(2Sa 8:10) ... את ...

(1Ch 18:10) ... את ...

(1Ch 18:10) ...

(2Sa 8:10) ...

(2Sa 8:10) ...

[Back]

(10) There is a parallel between 1Ch 18:11 and 2Sa 8:11-12. Nonetheless, the former refers to gifts that David received in 1Ch 18:10, while the latter to gifts that he received in the occasion of 2Sa 8:10; see the note (9). The following table illustrates the similarity of the two passages.

The passage does not state that when David dedicated the gifts from the king of Hamath he had already obtained the treasures from the other nations and dedicated them, but that when he got those treasures, they were dedicated just as the gifts from the king of Hamath. [Back]

(11) A close examination of 2Sa 8:13 and 1Ch 18:12 reveals that they refer to different events. First, David defeated the Syrians (2Sa 8:13), then he set garrisons in Edom (2Sa 8:14). Thus, it follows that the Syrians came to help Edom. Subsequently the Edomites rebelled, for Abishai came, defeated them (1Ch 18:12), and set again garrisons in Edom (1Ch 18:13). In view of Ps 60:1 (2) and Ps 83:6 (7), it could be concluded that the Edomites rebelled once more and were defeated by Joab, who resorted to an extreme measure to subdue them (1Ki 11:15-16). It is interesting to notice that victories against Edom took place several times in valleys of salt. Thus, the victories of 2Sa 8:13 and Ps 60:1(2) were בגיא מלח "in a valley of salt", while the victories of 1Ch 18:12 and 2Ki 14:7, 2Ch 25:11 were בגיא המלח "in the Valley of Salt". The following table emphasizes the differences between 2Sa 8:13, 1Ch 18:12, and Ps 60:1(2), providing evidence that the three verses do not refer to the same events.

[Back]

(12) There are remarkable similarities between 2Sa 8:14 and 1Ch 18:13. Nonetheless, 2Sa 8:14 refers to garrisons that were set after David defeated the Edomites, while 1Ch 18:13 refers to garrisons that were set after Abishai defeated the subsequent rebellion of Edom; see the note (11) above. Comparing נצבים in 2Sa 8:14 and נציבים in 1Ch 18:13, the emphasis of 1Ch 18:13 on the word נציבים "garrisons" suggests that the garrisons set up by Abishai were stronger. The following table illustrates the similarity of the two verses.

[Back]

(13) There is considerable similarity between 2Sa 8:15-18 and 1Ch 18:14-17, as illustrated by the following table. Nonetheless, the differences between the two passages indicate that they do not speak about the same period of time. Note that 2Sa 8:17 speaks of a time when Ahimelech was priest and Seraiah scribe, while 1Ch 18:16 speaks of a time when Abimelech was priest and Shavsha scribe.

2Sa 8:15-18 and 1Ch 18:14-17 could also be compared with 2Sa 20:23-26, which lists the officials of David towards the end of his reign. The following table compares the three lists of officials; note that 2Sa 20:23-26 lists the officials in a different order.

(14) In view of the phrase אחרי כן that appears in both 2Sa 10:1 and 1Ch 19:1, it could be concluded that 2Sa 9:1-11 and 1Ch 18:12-17 happened about the same time. [Back]
