Notes:
(1) Comparing וארון ברית יהוה in 1Ch 17:1 and וארון האלהים in 2Sa 7:2, it may be that what David said was, וארון ברית יהוה ארון האלהים. [Back]
(2) When comparing certain segments of text, such as in 2Sa 7:6 and 1Ch 17:5, it would appear that the Lord had a way of emphasizing almost all of his words. This could be concluded by noting that what is less emphasized in one account, receives more emphasis in the other. For example, when comparing למיום העלתי את בני ישראל ממצרים in 2Sa 7:6 with מן היום אשר העליתי את ישראל in 1Ch 17:5, it can be seen that time has a greater emphasis in 1Ch 17:5, for מן היום אשר העליתי is longer than למיום העלתי. The action of the Lord by which he took Israel from Egypt is also emphasized in 1Ch 17:5, for העליתי is not contracted. However, 2Sa 7:6 has בני ישראל instead of ישראל, emphasizing in this way Israel; it also gives some emphasis to the place from which Israel was set free (Egypt) by mentioning it explicitly. The following table summarizes these remarks; emphasis is indicated in red.

(3) As written, the form אכרתה of 2Sa 7:9 could be parsed as a qal imperfect form with paragogic heh. However, אכרית in 1Ch 17:8 is a hiphil form. Assuming that the dialect spoken at that time was not entirely identical to Biblical Hebrew, it would follow that what the Lord said is accurately conveyed in Biblical Hebrew with either a qal or a hiphil form of כרת. [Back]
(4) It could be noted that 2Sa 7:9-10 and 1Ch 17:8-9 contain a segment of text in which words which receive less emphasis in one account have more emphasis in the other; see also the example in the note (2). In the following table, words that receive more emphasis are marked in red.

(5) Note that והגיד לך יהוה כי בית יעשה לך יהוה in 2Sa 7:11 and ואגד לך ובית יבנה לך יהוה in 1Ch 17:10 are understood here to be two different statements. The former statement is, "and the LORD hast told thee that the LORD will make thee a house", while the latter statement is, "and the LORD telleth thee that the LORD will also build thee a house." Thus, in 2Sa 7:11 the Lord reminded David of an earlier promise and in 1Ch 17:10 he reinstated it. That the Lord had spoken before about the house of David can be seen in several passages. King Saul was told that his kingdom will not last and that another person will reign over Israel in 1Sa 13:13-14, 15:28. At the Lord's command, David was anointed in 1Sa 16:13, and the fact that he would reign in the place of Saul became well known (1Sa 23:17, 24:20 (24:21), 28:17, 2Sa 3:17-18, 5:2). Now 1Sa 13:13-14 implied that the one reigning in the place of Saul would have an eternal kingdom. This indicated that David would have descendants, and thus a house. So, the Lord indicated that he will make a house for David a long time before 2Sa 7 and 1Ch 17. [Back]
(6) Note that 2Sa 7:19 and 1Ch 17:17 record different segments of the prayer of David. The second half of 1Ch 17:17 states, ותדבר על בית עבדך למרחוק וראיתני כתור האדם המעלה יהוה אלהים "And thou hast spoken concerning the house of thy servant for a great while to come, and hast shown me things pertaining to the life of the Man from on high, O LORD God." Note that כתור was derived from the verb תור "to go about" with the meaning "according to the going about", that is, "pertaining to the life". The second half of 2Sa 7:19 states, ותדבר גם אל בית עבדך למרחוק וזאת תורת האדם אדני יהוה "And thou hast spoken also to the the house of thy servant for a great while to come, even this law of man, O Lord GOD." Thus, David speaks about the Messiah at the end of 1Ch 17:17, but about the law at the end of 2Sa 7:19, for God's word is spoken to all generations. [Back] (7) Considering 2Sa 7:23 and 1Ch 17:21, it may be that David said ולשום שם instead of ולשום לו שם or לשום לך שם, and לו and לך were added to clarify the meaning of David's words. [Back] (8) 2Sa 7:25 and 1Ch 17:23 are not described precisely as a petition of David that God would do what he had promised, but as words indicating that he agreed with God's plan and was eager to see it carried out. 1Ch 17:27 indicates that David believed that God would do what he had promised. [Back] (9) Considering אל in 2Sa 7:28 and על in 1Ch 17:26, it is possible that the words of David in his dialect could be rendered with either אל "to" or על "concerning" in Biblical Hebrew. [Back] (10) 1Ch 17:27 is not a petition but a statement indicating that David trusted that the Lord would fulfill his promise. Therefore, when comparing הואל וברך in 2Sa 7:29 with הואלת לברך in 1Ch 17:27, it can be concluded that הואל and ברך of 2Sa 7:29 are infinitive absolute forms. Thus, 2Sa 7:29 states, "With favor and blessing of the house of thy servant that it may be forever before thee, for thou art the Lord God, hast thou spoken, and the house of thy servant will be blessed with thy blessing forever." [Back] (11) Note that ומברך לעולם in 1Ch 17:27 is interpreted here as a more compact way of stating the same as ומברכתך יברך בית עבדך לעולם in 2Sa 7:29. Moreover, הואל וברך ... יהוה דברת in 2Sa 7:29 and הואלת לברך ... יהוה in 1Ch 17:27 are seen as two similar ways of phrasing what David said at that time. As indicated also in the note (10) above, 2Sa 7:29 is understood as stating, "With favor and blessing of the house of thy servant that it may be forever before thee, for thou art the Lord God, hast thou spoken. Thou hast blessed, and the house of thy servant will be blessed with thy blessing forever." Moreover, 1Ch 17:27 is understood as stating, "Thou hast been pleased to bless the house of thy servant that it may be forever before thee, for thou art the Lord God. Thou hast blessed, and the house of thy servant will be blessed with thy blessing forever." [Back]
