On Psalm 33

(Ps 33:1) Rejoice in the LORD, O ye righteous: for praise is comely for the upright.

The word translated "Rejoice" could be translated more literally "Shout for joy". God is worthy of our best praise. One reason to rejoice greatly in him, is that "Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him" (1Co 2:9).

(Ps 33:2)NKJV Praise the LORD with the harp;
Make melody to Him with an instrument of ten strings.

The word translated "instrument" could denote a harp.

(Ps 33:3)MKJV Sing to Him a new song; play skillfully with shouts of joy.

(Ps 33:4)KJV For the word of the LORD is right; and all his works are done in truth.

The words translated "in truth" are translated "by faith" in "the just shall live by his faith" (Hab 2:4). If applied to God, the last part of Ps 33:4 reminds us that God does all his works faithfully. If applied to believers, the last part of Ps 33:4 reminds us of the works that can only be done by faith. " ... for without me ye can do nothing" (Jn 15:5).

(Ps 33:5) He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the LORD.
(Ps 33:6) By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.
(Ps 33:7) He gathereth the waters of the sea together as an heap: he layeth up the depth in storehouses.

When Israel crossed the Red Sea, the waters were gathered together as a heap.

(Ex 15:8) And with the blast of thy nostrils the waters were gathered together, the floods stood upright as an heap, and the depths were congealed in the heart of the sea.

Waters stood as a heap also when Israel crossed the Jordan (Jos 3:13-16). The Lord did twice a similar miracle, once through Elijah (2Ki 2:8) and once through Elisha (2Ki 2:14).

(Ps 33:8) Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.
(Ps 33:9) For he spake, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.
(Ps 33:10) The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect.

The word translated "heathen" means "nations". In this context it obviously refers to unbelievers.

(Ps 33:11) The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.
(Ps 33:12) Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.

(1Pt 2:9)EMTV But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, that you may proclaim the excellent virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
(1Pt 2:10) who formerly were not a people but now are the people of God, who had not received mercy, but now have received mercy.

(Ps 33:13) The LORD looketh from heaven; he beholdeth all the sons of men.
(Ps 33:14) From the place of his habitation he looketh upon all the inhabitants of the earth.

(Ps 33:15)MKJV Together He forms their hearts; His understanding is to all their works.

The Lord forms the hearts of all (Ro 9:21), of both those who resist him (Ex 7:3, Jn 12:40) and of those who submit to him (Eze 36:26).

(Ps 33:16) There is no king saved by the multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by much strength.
(Ps 33:17) An horse is a vain thing for safety: neither shall he deliver any by his great strength.

(Pr 21:31)NKJV The horse is prepared for the day of battle,
But deliverance is of the LORD.

(Ps 33:18) Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy;
(Ps 33:19) To deliver their soul from death, and to keep them alive in famine.

(Heb 13:5) ... he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

(Ps 33:20) Our soul waiteth for the LORD: he is our help and our shield.
(Ps 33:21) For our heart shall rejoice in him, because we have trusted in his holy name.
(Ps 33:22) Let thy mercy, O LORD, be upon us, according as we hope in thee.
