Cherubim
In the following verses the KJV uses the word "oracle" for the Hebrew word describing the innermost room of the temple, that is, the Holy of Holies.
(1Ki 6:20) And the oracle in the forepart was twenty cubits in length, and twenty cubits in breadth, and twenty cubits in the height thereof: and he overlaid it with pure gold; and so covered the altar which was of cedar.
(1Ki 6:21) So Solomon overlaid the house within with pure gold: and he made a partition by the chains of gold before the oracle; and he overlaid it with gold.
(1Ki 6:22) And the whole house he overlaid with gold, until he had finished all the house: also the whole altar that was by the oracle he overlaid with gold.
(1Ki 6:23) And within the oracle he made two cherubims of olive tree, each ten cubits high.
(1Ki 6:24) And five cubits was the one wing of the cherub, and five cubits the other wing of the cherub: from the uttermost part of the one wing unto the uttermost part of the other were ten cubits.
(1Ki 6:25) And the other cherub was ten cubits: both the cherubims were of one measure and one size.
(1Ki 6:26) The height of the one cherub was ten cubits, and so was it of the other cherub.
(1Ki 6:27) And he set the cherubims within the inner house: and they stretched forth the wings of the cherubims, so that the wing of the one touched the one wall, and the wing of the other cherub touched the other wall; and their wings touched one another in the midst of the house.
(2Ch 5:7) And the priests brought in the ark of the covenant of the LORD unto his place, to the oracle of the house, into the most holy place, even under the wings of the cherubims:
(2Ch 5:8) For the cherubims spread forth their wings over the place of the ark, and the cherubims covered the ark and the staves thereof above.
The lid of the ark of the covenant (the mercy seat) had also cherubims, as God commanded Moses in Ex 25:17-22.
(Ex 37:6) And he made the mercy seat of pure gold: two cubits and a half was the length thereof, and one cubit and a half the breadth thereof.
(Ex 37:7) And he made two cherubims of gold, beaten out of one piece made he them, on the two ends of the mercy seat;
(Ex 37:8) One cherub on the end on this side, and another cherub on the other end on that side: out of the mercy seat made he the cherubims on the two ends thereof.
(Ex 37:9) And the cherubims spread out their wings on high, and covered with their wings over the mercy seat, with their faces one to another; even to the mercy seatward were the faces of the cherubims.
The cherubim of the Holy of Holies that covered the ark of the covenant were commanded by God, as David mentioned explicitly here:
(1Ch 28:18) ... the altar of incense made of refined gold, and its weight; also his plan for the golden chariot of the cherubim that spread their wings and covered the ark of the covenant of the LORD.
(1Ch 28:19) All this he made clear to me in writing from the hand of the LORD, all the work to be done according to the plan.
In 1Ch 28:18 we read that "the golden chariot of the cherubim" covered the ark of the covenant. The chariot of the cherubim may remind us of prophetic visions in which cherubim are mentioned in the context of God coming or departing. For instance, we can read about it in Eze 1.
(Eze 1:22)NKJV The likeness of the firmament above the heads of the living creatures was like the color of an awesome crystal, stretched out over their heads.
(Eze 1:23) And under the firmament their wings spread out straight, one toward another. ...
(Eze 1:26) And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it.
The cherubim covering the ark in the Holy of Holies indicated the presence of the Lord above the cherubim and the ark.
(Ps 99:1) The LORD reigneth; let the people tremble: he sitteth between the cherubims; let the earth be moved.
(Rev 4:6)EMTV and before the throne was something like a sea of glass, similar to crystal. And in the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living beings full of eyes in front and in back.
(Rev 4:8)EMTV And the four living beings, each one having six wings apiece, were full of eyes around and within. And they never rest day or night, saying, "Holy, holy, holy, Holy, holy, holy, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, He who was, and who is, and who is to come!"
In Eze 1, when God came to Ezekiel, God was on the throne and above the firmament. Now, the LORD had said that "heaven is my throne" (Is 66:1), where "heaven" appears to denote the highest heaven (which is therefore above the firmament). It is interesting to note that the vision of Ezekiel did not show God coming physically to a place on the earth, for God was on the throne and the firmament was still under his throne. Rather it showed God giving special attention to a place on the earth, for the cherubim did go there (Eze 1:15).
